The World Challenge team visited Mamallapuram on 25th August 2011 to film a documentary about our project 'Trash to Gas' for the BBC's World Challenge. They stayed for three days and it was an interesting experience for our team. Even though we are directly involved in the project, it gave us an opportunity to revisit it from a different perspective. The team proceeded with the filming of the documentary with meticulous planning and managed to capture the project in detail.
The zeal and enthusiasm shown by World Challenge producer Ken Pugh and his assistant Gyalsten was a great inspiration to us. On the second day we started the filming very early in the morning and continued till late in the evening with tiny breaks in between. Because everyone on the shoot was so involved in the process we lost track of time.
The Green Friends (underprivileged people involved in waste management activities) had a refreshing change from their routine work and became heroes and heroines in Ken's movie! The curious residents of Mamallapuram were thrilled to know about the award and they felt very proud to be the residents of the town.
What the award means to us:
Solid waste management is a difficult and tiresome job and the news of being shortlisted as one of the 12 finalists motivated our team to a great extent. If our project is selected for the award, it would not only boost our team's morale but will increase the importance of proper waste management among the policy makers.
In a developing countries like India a lot of effort is needed to generate awareness about the importance of waste management and environment protection. We sincerely hope that this award will do that effortlessly and garner the attention of all sections of society towards preserving our environment.
